Hoverboard Safety

Hoverboard is the current trending transportation toy that most children and even adults have on their gift list. Hoverboards became most known after the release of the very popular Back to the Future films.  It’s a personal transportation device, similar to a skateboard, but it uses magnetic means of levitation to move. Despite the name, Hoverboards do not actually hover, they balance on two wheels. There’s a certain amount of skill involved to use, so of course, with the recent popularity there’s great concern regarding injuries and accidents.  The following are some useful safety tips and guidelines to help us all be safe when enjoying the Hoverboard:

When buying/purchasing:

Do’s

• Take the time to research the product! It should be compliant with federal standards, inspections and certifications.  Check for the compliant indication on its packaging, the device itself or its charging equipment. Devices not bearing the mark indicating compliance have not been tested to meet minimum safety standards.
• When buying online, verify that the device meets standards. There are many products on the market which may not meet U.S. inspection and safety requirements.
• Buy a device with a warranty, or buy it in a physical store. If you do buy online, buy from a reputable source. Also, check with your retailer regarding the safety of the device you are purchasing.

When Charging:

Do’s

• Allow the device time to cool off after use and prior to charging.
• Plug in only one device per electrical socket.
• Follow the manufacturer’s recommended charging time.

Don’ts

• Never leave the device unattended while it is charging.
• Do not overcharge the device.
• Do not leave the device plugged into an outlet overnight.
• Do not use imitation electrical chargers.

When Operating:

Do’s

• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment similar to bicycle safety equipment. Like a helmet, knee,  elbow and wrist pads.
• Operate the device in accordance with its intended use.
• If the device becomes very hot, stop the use of it and consult with the manufacturer or retailer.  This could be a sign of a faulty battery that needs replacing.

Don’ts

• Do not text or operate a cellphone while using the device.
• Do not ride on roads, as they are deemed too unsafe for the road.
